Preventing Crime

Our district is a beautiful one, but we hear more and more about thefts, robberies and drugs. It matters that we keep our communities safe—that our children grow up secure.

I will work to encourage the development of neighborhood watch and Citizens-on-Patrol programs to deter crime.

Foot patrols should be in the community as a resource and as a deterrent.

Schools should be open from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, serving as community centers and having programs in the arts and athletics to entertain our youth in their off-hours.

Rather than increasing the prison populations and imprisoning people who are ill, we need to fully fund drug rehabilitation treatment programs.

Prisons need to be clean and humane, and they need good vocational training and educational programs. In that way, the prisoners emerge able to take their places in society.

To reduce crime, we need to take a holistic approach that includes reducing poverty, improving local economies, providing quality education, and through community organizing that empowers the citizenry.
