Investing in Education

Our community has great schools. Four of the top high schools in the country are located in this district. These schools have committed parents and strong support from administration for the teachers. This is what we need to see at all the Baltimore County schools.

Funding has eroded over the last several years, and we need to re-instate it.

Early childhood education needs to be a mandate, not a choice, so that children can develop an early love of learning.

School buildings must be open from 7:00am through 9:00pm so that enrichment programs in art, music, theater, dance, writing, poetry, athletics, and those subjects being cut from the curriculum can exist. Expanding the role of schools can help reduce crime. This will serve to keep children off the streets and nurture their enthusiasm for the arts.

As highly trained professionals, teachers need to be fairly compensated. To attract and keep quality teachers, we need to make sure their salaries are based on the real cost of living.

We also need to reduce the burdens that distract from the classroom. Teacher development programs and administrative tasks need to be reduced and consolidated to give teachers more time to spend on teaching.

To make college more affordable, I support increasing the availability of need-based aid to more working families.

I support the cap on tuition for public universities as long as the State pays its fair share. This will necessitate recalculating the funding formula.

I will work to fund an educational system that trains our children to think critically so that they can make intelligent decisions about the important matters that affect us all.

Unlike in the past, workers today are more likely to change careers several times. We need to make sure that students are broadly educated so they can be prepared for an ever-changing workforce.
