Outpouring of support followed soldier's death

As the mother of Nicholas Ziolkowski, one of the all-too-many killed in Iraq, I was very moved by your editorial. (Towson TImes, Oct. 26.)

I want to comment, though, on how supportive this community has been to me over the past year.

I got thousands of letters, cards and Mass cards.

Kind people, some of whom knew Nick or me but some who didn't, came to the house to comfort me.

Many people sent plans, food and flowers -- again, some came from friends but some came from good-hearted strangers.

People donated more than $300,000 in Nick's memory to scholarships at Boys' Latin and Towson University, and to charities dear to them.

About Faces Salon and Day Spa donated all revenue from one day's business to the two scholarships set up in Nick's name. This meant that all the operators donated their time for the day; in addition to taking no money for the day, the owners provided lunch for everyone in the salon at the time.

Because of their generosity and that of the other donors, two boys at Boys' Latin are getting sizable scholarships that will take them through high school, and a student at Towson University will receive some help with his or her expenses.

I am very grateful to this community for the outpouring that is still continuing a year after Nick was killed on Nov. 14, 2004. My hope is that I can give back to the community that has given so much to me and to both my sons—and now. I have a granddaughter living here, too.
