Vets seeking study options may find them at college fair

02/23/06
By Loni Ingraham

They have been overseas and back. But now these veterans who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq may view a college education as a shore too distant.

Not so, according to Towson University, which is sponsoring Operation Service to Scholarship March 3 to help them explore their education options after they leave military service.

Service to Scholarship is part open house, part college fair designed especially for Afghan and Iraq war veterans, according to Tracy Miller, the TU academic adviser who is coordinating the event. But it's open to any veteran.

"Many veterans could use some guidance," says Miller, who got the idea for the event through talking to friends of her late son, Marine Cpl. Nick Ziolkowski, who was killed in Iraq in November 2004.

"Often, they are considering college but unsure where to go, what to study or how to finance their education," Miller says.

"Any vet who wants to further his or her education is welcome to come and explore the options. We want to let them know what college can do for them, help them define their goals and match them to the school that's best suited for them."

To that end, the vets will be able to talk to representatives of a number of schools as well as TU, including University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Villa Julie College, Coppin State University, Baltimore City Community College, the Community College of Baltimore County, Baltimore International College ( School of Culinary Arts, Business and Management) and the TESST College of Technology.

The event, which will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in the third floor Susquehanna Terrace room of TU's University Union, will also feature panel discussions on choosing the right school, learning about the extra benefits the vets are entitled to, exploring the college credits they may have earned through their military service and adapting to college life.

"While many may come in as freshmen, they are not 18," says Miller. "Their experiences go way beyond those of the typical freshman. They can drink with the best of them, but they typically are not fraternity boys."

Admission is free and open to all veterans.

Free parking will be available in the Union Garage or Lot 11. Both are adjacent to the University Union, which is off Osler Drive on the campus.
